Caroline Spanton

Caroline Spanton (Pontypridd) – Nominated by Welsh Rowing

52nd Torch Trophy Trust Awards 24th February 2015“Caroline sat on the Welsh Rowing Board for a period of five years, and stepped down in November 2014. To say that her work and achievements during that time were spectacular is an understatement.

During her time on the Board, Welsh Rowing went through significant changes, and Caroline was at the forefront of these.

In November 2013, the Chair, two Board members and the senior paid executive officer stepped down in the space of a month. With the organisation in such a precarious position and despite having no previous Chair experience, Caroline volunteered to take up the position.

During 2014, Welsh Rowing signed up to the sport sector’s voluntary Code of Good Governance, and used this as a tool to frame its movement towards a skills-based board, and one that is representative of the community Welsh Rowing serves. It was Caroline’s calm and decisive leadership during this time that has enabled Welsh Rowing to modernise as an organisation.

Having helped guide Welsh Rowing through the process, Caroline then recognised the need for a new HQ for the organisation and secured both office space and a crew room for athletes.

Welsh Rowing is now a better organisation for Caroline’s time on the board and as Chair, and this is reflected in what Welsh Rowing can now deliver at grassroots level.”
