Dame Di Ellis

Torch Torch Trust Chairman, Paul Dimond CMG, has paid tribute to Trustee Dame Di Ellis who has passed away following a short illness, at the age of 79.

‘The Trustees and supporters of the Torch Trophy Trust have been greatly saddened by the passing of Dame Di Ellis on 18 May.

Known widely as the First Lady of British Rowing, Lady Ellis was Honorary President and former Chairman of British Rowing.  Soon after her appointment as Dame of the British Empire in 2013 and alongside her many commitments to sports administration, including Life President of the British Olympic Association and of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, and with characteristic generosity, Lady Ellis made time to become our Trustee, lending her support to volunteers across all sports, attending our regular meetings and annual Awards.

She will be so sadly missed here too but remembered with our deep respect for her extraordinary achievements in rowing and for her dedication and inspiration to encourage others of all ages across all sports in the United Kingdom.’

Dame Di Ellis leaves behind her husband John, daughter Claire and two grandsons.

A private funeral for family only will be held. Details regarding the memorial service, which will be held at St Mary’s, Henley, will be shared in due course. The family asks that any messages of condolence are sent through British Rowing – 6 Lower Mall, London, W6 9DJ.
