Gill Jacob (Swansea) – Nominated by Swim Wales
“When people describe Gill’s service to swimming over the years, the consistent phrase you’ll hear about her efforts and service is ‘above and beyond.’
Gill has been involved in swimming for over 50 years in a voluntary capacity. Even when working full time she used her annual leave to help out in clubs. She’s always been a re-assuring and professional poolside presence.
Initially she spent many years at club level where she has held many roles, from being on poolside to a committee member. She has officiated across Wales at every competition and is still a licensed official.
Having retired, most of her time is spent as a team manager, travelling with and supervising children, ensuring they are safe and secure in their environments and also fulfilling their potential and enjoying the sport.
Her most recent team manager role was for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow. There are too many areas to list within this role that many people are unaware of, but Gill managed these without fuss and delivered what was described as a “brilliant” example of team management at the event.
Gill now works fulltime for Swim Wales yet still volunteers in team managing, once again using her annual leave to travel with swimming teams. She is a real ambassador for the sport.”
