John Heron, known as Max, has had a connection with rowing for over 20 years and he was nominated for his huge contribution to the development of rowing at Whitlingham Boathouses in Norwich.
Over a period of five years, Max pulled together volunteers, commercial entities and other stakeholders to deliver a new community boathouse for the Club. In addition to this, Max managed everything from fundraising, design, construction to delivery. As a result of his efforts, Norwich Rowing Club’s membership has doubled, and participation has grown in all age groups, especially with adult beginners.
Max’s driving force and inspirational energy shows the impact volunteers really have in sport.
Unfortunately Max was unable to attend. Annamarie Phelps, Chair of British Rowing, collected the award on his behalf.
